## How Calculate works

### 1. Every charge on its own line

Duty, fees and taxes come back as separate lines, each with the rate used, the amount, the agreement or exemption that applied and who collects it: the border, the carrier or you at checkout. Added to goods and shipping, they give the [landed cost](https://border.bot/glossary#landed-cost).

**Landed cost, Vietnam to the United States**

| Item | Detail | Value |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Goods | From the product page | $24.00 |
| Shipping | Your carrier rate | $6.50 |
| Duty | For this code and origin | $5.40 |
| Fees | Customs processing | $1.10 |
| Taxes | No import tax on this item | $0.00 |
| Landed cost | | $37.00 |

Illustrative figures. Rates change, so run the calculator for a current answer.

### 2. Additional duties are part of the sum

US goods can owe more than the duty in the main schedule. Calculate reads chapter 99 of the [HTS](https://border.bot/glossary#hts-code), so Section 232 and Section 301 duties, safeguards and other measures are added for the origin and the product, each on its own line with its heading.

**US measures read from chapter 99**

| Item | Detail | Value |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Section 232 | Metals, vehicles, wood, semiconductors and more | 9903 |
| Section 301 | Duties on goods from named countries | 9903 |
| Section 201 | Safeguards on named products | 9903 |
| Safeguards | Subchapter IV measures | 9904 |

Anti-dumping and countervailing duties are case by case and noted when they may apply.

### 3. Thresholds checked for the way it ships

[De minimis](https://border.bot/glossary#de-minimis) rules differ by country, by origin and by carrier. Calculate checks the right threshold for the consignment, so a parcel under it shows no duty and one over it shows why.

**Thresholds and rates Calculate applies**

| Item | Detail | Value |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Canada | Courier from the US or Mexico: duty / tax | CA$150 / 40 |
| Canada | Courier or post from anywhere else | CA$20 |
| UK | No customs duty on consignments up to | £135 |
| UK | Import VAT, standard rate | 20% |

### 4. Agreements, terms and the entry it needs

Calculate shows the [trade agreement preference](https://border.bot/glossary#preferential-origin) a product could claim and whether it was applied, takes any [Incoterms](https://border.bot/glossary#incoterms) 2020 rule, and says whether the shipment needs a [formal](https://border.bot/glossary#formal-entry) or [informal](https://border.bot/glossary#informal-entry) entry. Every line keeps its legal basis and source link.

## Duty on delivery loses the sale twice

When a customer is asked for duty and tax at the door, many refuse the parcel. You pay to ship it out, pay to ship it back, and lose the customer. Charging the right amount at checkout fixes both, as long as the amount is right.

### No bill on the doorstep

Show duty, tax and fees in the basket and collect them with the order. The customer pays what they saw, and the parcel is delivered without a second payment.

### Margins that hold when tariffs change

US additional duties change often. Calculate reads the current tariff, including chapter 99, so a new Section 232 or 301 duty shows up in your price, not in an invoice from your broker weeks later.

### Every number has a source

Each charge comes with its rate, legal basis and a link to the rule. When a customer or a carrier disputes a charge, you can show where it came from.

### Whole carts in one request

Price a multi-line shipment at once, with the de minimis threshold applied to the consignment the way customs applies it.

## Canadian import tax by province

Tax on goods imported into Canada depends on where they are delivered. Calculate applies GST, HST or the combined provincial rate for the province on the order.

| | Value | Detail |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Alberta | 5% | GST |
| British Columbia | 12% | GST + PST |
| Manitoba | 12% | GST + PST |
| New Brunswick | 15% | HST |
| Newfoundland and Labrador | 15% | HST |
| Nova Scotia | 14% | HST |
| Ontario | 13% | HST |
| Prince Edward Island | 15% | HST |
| Quebec | 14.975% | GST + QST |
| Saskatchewan | 11% | GST + PST |
| Yukon | 5% | GST |

## Who uses Calculate

### Checkout

Quote duty and tax per basket and collect them with the order, so international orders are [delivered duty paid](https://border.bot/blog/ddp-vs-dap-ecommerce).

### Sourcing and pricing

Compare what the same product costs landed from different origins before you place a purchase order, additional duties included.

### Marketplaces and carriers

Show buyers the full cost before they pay, or estimate the duty and tax a shipment will owe when the label is created.

### Developers and AI agents

One endpoint for a product, one for a cart. Through [MCP](https://border.bot/mcp), an agent can [classify](https://border.bot/classify) and price an order in the same conversation.

## How landed cost is calculated

### Start from the customs value

Duty is charged on the [customs value](https://border.bot/glossary#customs-value), which is usually the price paid for the goods. Many countries, the EU and the UK among them, add the cost of shipping and insurance to the border. The US and Canada value goods without the international freight. Calculate applies the right basis for the destination and shows the customs value it used.

### Duty, then tax on top of duty

Duty rates come in three forms: a percentage of value (ad valorem), an amount per unit such as per kilogram or per pair (specific), or both together (compound). The rate depends on the tariff code, the origin and any trade agreement the goods qualify for.

[Import VAT, GST](https://border.bot/glossary#import-vat) or sales tax is then usually charged on the customs value plus the duty, so a higher duty also raises the tax. Customs processing fees are added on top. Calculate keeps each of these as a separate line, in the order customs applies them.

### Thresholds and who collects

Many countries waive duty, tax or both below a [de minimis](https://border.bot/glossary#de-minimis) value, and the threshold can depend on how the parcel travels and where it comes from. Some countries have their sellers collect tax at checkout instead of at the border. Calculate checks the threshold for the consignment and says who collects each charge: the border, the carrier or the seller.

### Delivered duty paid or not

Under [DDP](https://border.bot/glossary#ddp) terms the seller pays duty and tax and the customer pays nothing on delivery; under [DAP](https://border.bot/glossary#dap) the customer pays when the parcel arrives. Most cross-border shoppers expect the price at checkout to be the final price, so knowing the [landed cost](https://border.bot/blog/landed-cost-explained) in advance is what makes [DDP possible](https://border.bot/blog/ddp-vs-dap-ecommerce) without losing money on every order.

## Three ways to price duty and tax

| | Flat estimate | Carrier bills later | border.bot Calculate |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Accuracy | A guess per country | Exact, after the fact | Per product, code and origin |
| When you know | Never exactly | After delivery | Before the customer pays |
| US additional duties | Usually missed | Billed as they apply | Included, line by line |
| Explanation | None | An invoice total | Rate, legal basis and source per line |
| Customer experience | Over- or under-charged | Surprise bill on delivery | Pays once, at checkout |

## Questions about Calculate

### What is landed cost?

The total cost of getting goods to the buyer: the goods, shipping and insurance, plus the duty, import tax and customs fees due at the destination. Collecting it at checkout means the buyer pays nothing on delivery.

### Which destinations can Calculate price?

The [United States](https://border.bot/countries/united-states), the [United Kingdom](https://border.bot/countries/united-kingdom), [Canada](https://border.bot/countries/canada) and all 27 EU member states, with more added as their data is verified. A calculation for a destination that isn’t covered yet says so instead of guessing.

### Does it include Section 301 and Section 232 duties?

Yes. For US imports, Calculate reads chapter 99 of the Harmonized Tariff Schedule and adds the additional duties that apply to the product and its origin, each as its own line.

### Are carrier fees included?

No. Carrier brokerage and handling fees depend on your contract with the carrier, so they are not added. Measures that apply only under certain conditions are listed separately and left out of the total.

### Where do the rates come from?

From each country’s published tariff and tax authority. Every line carries the source link and legal basis it was calculated from.

### What is de minimis?

A value below which a country doesn’t collect duty, tax or both on an import. Thresholds [differ by country](https://border.bot/countries), by how the parcel travels and sometimes by origin. Calculate applies the threshold for the consignment and shows whether it applied.

### Is import VAT charged on the duty too?

Usually yes. In the [UK](https://border.bot/countries/united-kingdom) and the EU, [import VAT](https://border.bot/glossary#import-vat) is charged on the customs value plus the duty, so the tax line depends on the duty line. Calculate works them out in that order.

### Can it price a whole cart?

Yes. The shipment endpoint prices every line of an order together and applies thresholds to the consignment as a whole, the way customs does.

### Does it apply trade agreements?

Calculate shows the preferential rate a product could claim under a trade agreement and whether it was applied. Claiming a preference usually needs proof of origin, so it is shown separately from the standard rate.

### Which currency is the result in?

The destination’s currency, converted from the currency you send at current exchange rates.
