How United States import duty is worked out
The calculator follows the United States’s own order. Each step uses border.bot’s live United States data.
Work out the customs value
Customs value = goods price (shipping and insurance left out)
United States values imports on an FOB basis: the price of the goods, without international shipping or insurance. Convert it to USD at the customs exchange rate.
Check the de minimis thresholds
Duty: always · VAT: always
In United States, duty is charged whatever the value, and VAT is charged whatever the value (measured on the goods).
Find the duty rate for the HS code
Duty = customs value × duty rate
The duty rate depends on the product’s HS code in United States’s tariff and on where the goods were made: a trade agreement can lower it to zero with proof of origin.
Add any fees and total it
Landed cost = goods + shipping + duty + tax + fees
Carriers and customs may add clearance or processing fees. The landed cost is everything the buyer pays to receive the goods.

Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate duties and taxes for United States?
Take the price of the goods, without international shipping, as the customs value, check it against the de minimis thresholds, multiply it by the duty rate of the product’s HS code, then add VAT. Fees from the carrier or customs come on top.
What is the de minimis threshold in United States?
Duty is charged whatever the value, and VAT is always charged.
Is shipping included in the customs value in United States?
No. United States values imports on an FOB basis: duty is charged on the price of the goods without international shipping or insurance.
Does the calculator include United States tariffs?
Yes. It applies every additional duty in force that the product’s HS code and origin meet, and the exemptions that lift one, on top of the regular duty. The United States’s tariffs in force are listed on their own page.
Does the result include VAT, GST and sales tax?
It includes import taxes charged at the border, such as VAT and GST, with the rate used. US state sales tax is not an import tax and is not included.
Are carrier fees included?
Government fees such as customs processing fees are included where they apply. Brokerage, disbursement or handling fees charged by carriers vary by carrier and contract, so they are not part of the result.
Is the estimate guaranteed?
No. It is an estimate based on the code, origin, values and the rules in force when you run it. Final charges are assessed by customs when the goods are declared, so check the result for high-value shipments.
